The Process

Step 1
Crafting The Recipe
Unleash your creativity and craft a unique beer recipe that will make taste buds tango with joy!
Step 1
Step 2
Select Superior Ingredients
Choose top-notch malted barley, hops bursting with flavor, and yeast strains that work their magic like beer wizards.
Step 2
Step 3
Mash and Lauter
Mix malted barley with hot water to awaken the sweet nectar within, then separate the liquid gold (wort) from the grain husks in a dance called lautering.
Step 3
Step 4
Boil and Hop
Bring the wort to a lively boil and add hops at just the right moments, infusing your brew with bitterness, flavor, and hoppy goodness.
Step 4
Step 5
Ferment the Magic
Cool the wort, introduce yeast, and let the party begin! Watch as the yeast transforms sugars into liquid gold, creating the soul of your beer.
Step 5

The quality of malted barley is highly important, but hops play a significant role in determining bitterness, flavour and aroma..

Step 6
Condition and Mature
Let your creation relax and mature, allowing the flavors to harmonize and mingle, creating a beer that's smooth as silk or as punchy as Rocky Balboa!
Step 6
Step 7
Sparkle with Carbonation
Let it ferment naturally for a light champagne style bubble or add some carbon dioxide for that perfect creamy head.
Step 7
Step 8
Dress to Impress
Choose cans or bottles and give them a personality makeover. Wrap them in eye-catching labels and artwork that tell the story of your brewery.
Step 8
Step 9
Embrace the Canning/Bottling Ritual
Fill each container with your liquid masterpiece, sealing them with satisfying clicks or rhythmic crimps. Lock in the freshness and anticipation!
Step 9
Step 10
Raise a Glass to Quality
Ensure your beer meets your high standards. Conduct sensory evaluations, analyze in the lab, and give every package a thumbs up. Then, share your creation with the world, spreading joy sip by sip!
Step 10

Hi, I'm Karen.

The Oban Beer Seller was born from a lifelong love of beer and the desire to take a leap of faith and a change of direction.  On the long drive home from Perth to Oban in August 2018 the lightbulb went on and the plans for my business were complete in my head by the end of the journey. A little craft beer shop in Oban.  Bringing it to life was challenging and could never have happened without the support and help from family and friends but on the 20th of March 2020 I opened for business – and closed on the 21st, we were in lockdown.  Not the start I had imagined.

The bottom line was there was no plan B so I just had to hang on.  During this time I learnt more about the brewing process and tasted a lot of beer.  My passion grew as I fell in love with the magic of fermentation, the tradition and history of brewing and just how amazing beer is.  The same four ingredients – water, malted barley, yeast and hops but endless possibilities of flavour, style, strength – how can you not love it.  Fast forward to 2023 and I’m still here. There have been highs and lows but the shining light is, and has always been, great beer and the incredible community of people that surround it. The focus has organically turned more towards small, independent Scottish breweries but the range of beers available at any one time is extensive and I really try to cover all tastes. The shop is packed from floor to ceiling with new beers arriving weekly. Our year highlight has become The Love of Beer celebration which marks the shop’s birthday in March and brings the brightest and best of Scottish brewing to Oban and provides the opportunity for beer lovers to gather and try beers on draft that they would otherwise only be able to dream of.

I'll see you there, cheers!
