THE OBAN BEER SELLER

A Wee Update from The Oban Beer Seller

It’s been an interesting year so far at The Oban Beer Seller – exciting in many ways, but also a reminder of how challenging it can be to run a small business just now. The world of independent retail isn’t an easy one, but I’m still here, still learning, and still just as passionate about great Scottish beer as ever.

One of the biggest changes this year has been the addition of beer tasting sessions in the shop. I gave the space a bit of a refresh earlier in the year so I could finally make room for them – something I’ve wanted to do for a long time. They’re still small and growing in popularity, but I absolutely love hosting them. There’s nothing better than sitting down with a few curious beer drinkers, talking through styles and flavours, and sharing the stories behind the breweries. If you fancy organising a wee session for your group, just get in touch – it’s a lovely, relaxed way to learn a bit more about Scottish beer.

When I’m not in the shop, you’ll usually find me up at The Rockfield Centre, where I’m a trustee – and also a part-time everything-else! From helping with recycling and hauling bins to sorting out admin or setting up for events, I seem to get roped into all sorts, and I wouldn’t have it any other way. It’s such a brilliant community hub, and it reminds me every day how much difference local people can make when they work together.

I also try to visit my suppliers when I can. It’s one of the best parts of what I do – chatting directly with the brewers, seeing where the magic happens, and keeping those relationships strong. Every can and bottle on my shelves comes from someone who genuinely cares about what they make, and that’s what keeps me passionate about stocking small, independent Scottish beer.

And of course, one of my highlights every year is organising the Love Beer Festival at the Rockfield Centre. It’s grown into a brilliant celebration of Scottish brewing and local community – a chance for beer lovers from near and far to gather, chat, and taste something new.

Running a small, independent shop in this climate is tough – costs keep rising, and people are watching their spending carefully. But I’m really encouraged by the number of customers choosing quality over quantity, and taking the time to enjoy a really good beer instead of a dozen average ones. I’ve also seen more people exploring low- and no-alcohol beers, and I’m proud to stock some excellent options from Scottish breweries who are putting just as much creativity and care into those as anything else.

So if you’re passing by, pop in for a chat or to see what’s new on the shelves – I’ll probably be halfway through rearranging the display (again) or talking far too enthusiastically about a new pale ale from a tiny brewery in Fife.

Cheers to good beer, good people, and keeping it local.
